Scroll’s Rokibuz Zaman wins Fearless Journalism Award
23 Mar, 2025
Dear Reader,
We’re proud to let you know that Scroll reporter Rokibuz Zaman has been awarded the 2024 Vishwa Nath-Delhi Press Award for Fearless Journalism, instituted by The Media Foundation. The award recognises his sustained reportage on the situation of minority groups in Assam.
In its citation, the jury commended Zaman for “exemplary courage and fearlessness in relentlessly pursuing a story to its logical conclusion”, even in the face of on-ground challenges. Zaman was praised for “tackling complex and sensitive issues with a level of ethics and integrity that is impressive”.
The Vishwa Nath-Delhi Press Award was established by The Media Foundation, created in 1979 in the aftermath of the Emergency, to defend freedom of expression and uphold the public interest in media and communication.
Zaman has reported in depth on how Assam’s minorities are being systematically discriminated against and dispossessed – from being excluded from welfare schemes for the rural landless to marginalised communities being evicted in Morigaon district and the state expanding its surveillance apparatus. His work, the jury said, embodies the core principles of investigative journalism: fairness, fearlessness and the pursuit of truth.
“His detailed reports are a testament to his commitment to uncovering important truths in the face of a state hostile to such exposés," they wrote.
At Scroll, we’re proud to support and publish journalism that challenges power, uncovers uncomfortable truths and centres the voices of those most often ignored by the mainstream media.
