Dear Reader,
The Tata Group and the Adani Group dominate vast parts of India’s economy and India’s corporate-funded media rarely questions them. Yet, this week, our small newsroom published two investigations that examined both conglomerates.
Our special correspondent Ayush Tiwari reported that the Tata Group donated Rs 758 crore to the BJP in April 2024, just before the Lok Sabha election and a month after the Modi government approved two Tata semiconductor units with subsidies totalling Rs 44,203 crore. This story adds to our ongoing coverage of India’s murky political financing.
Corporate-government ties – and their implications for citizens – were also the subject of a report by our contributor Shreegireesh Jalihal. He highlighted an overlooked court ruling that found Rajasthan’s state electricity company had overpaid Rs 1,400 crore to an Adani-led mining venture. The burden of this overpayment ultimately fell on electricity consumers across Rajasthan.
Despite our modest size, we remain relentless in scrutinising the powerful because accountability matters and silence is not an option. We take on these risks knowing that our readers have our back and that honest, public-spirited journalism can survive only when the public chooses to sustain it.
