Dear Reader,
We need your help.
This monsoon season has been devastating for Uttarakhand: cloudbursts, flash floods and landslides. The situation is so severe that a BJP parliamentarian, who barely escaped a landslide, called it a “severe natural calamity”.
But the highway he was traveling on tells a different story.
In 2016, the Char Dham Pariyojana began – a massive project to widen 900 kilometres of roads in the Uttarakhand Himalayas. Experts warned that cutting into the fragile mountains would spell disaster and even submitted a detailed report to the Supreme Court. Their concerns were overruled. Now, their worst warnings have come true.
We can’t let this story be buried.
Journalists Vaishnavi Rathore and Kritika Pant – who delivered this impactful video report from Sikkim earlier this year – are ready to hit the ground in Uttarakhand. They will investigate the full extent of the devastation along the Char Dham route, determine if the tragedy could have been avoided, and find out what can be done to prevent future disasters.
Help us fund their crucial video investigation today. Click here to ensure this man-made calamity is exposed.
